Elbit Systems UK has delivered the first set of Ground-Based Surveillance Radar (GBSR) systems to the British Army’s artillery branch, marking a key milestone in the service’s ongoing modernization programs. The handover comes shortly after the radar successfully completed a series of live-fire demonstrations earlier in 2025, proving its capability to support frontline operations. This initial batch represents the beginning of a phased delivery plan scheduled throughout the year.

A total of 55 GBSR units have been supplied so far, accompanied by support elements required for deployment and training. The remainder of the equipment will be provided later this year under a contract issued in 2023, which covers 90 radars with an option for 40 additional units. Built in the UK and Europe, the systems feature an open-architecture design, allowing seamless integration with British Army communication networks and future battlefield management systems.

The GBSR platform enhances the Army’s operational readiness by delivering advanced surveillance capabilities alongside precise fall-of-shot (FoS) correction for artillery forces. These functions help improve situational awareness, enable swift decision-making, and increase the survivability of soldiers operating in contested environments. The radar’s configurable design ensures it can meet evolving mission requirements across multiple domains.

Capable of detecting and tracking personnel, mechanized vehicles, low-flying helicopters, and unmanned aerial systems, the GBSR provides early warning of hostile activity while supporting the monitoring of friendly movements. Its FoS correction mode offers automated impact detection for mortar and artillery fire, allowing gunners to make rapid adjustments and significantly improve accuracy. This dual-purpose capability strengthens the British Army’s ability to respond effectively to modern battlefield threats.
