Egypt has officially launched the PV43-M coastal defense vessel program, partnering with German shipbuilder NVL Group to bolster its maritime security and local shipbuilding capacity. The project began production in September at Alexandria Shipyard under the oversight of NVL Egypt, marking the start of an ambitious fleet expansion effort.
The program calls for the construction of ten 43-meter-long (141 feet) PV43-M class ships, designed with state-of-the-art European weapons and surveillance systems. These vessels will play a vital role in coastal protection, reconnaissance, and safeguarding key maritime infrastructure. Awarded in 2023, the initiative represents the first fully Egypt-built naval project, supported technically by NVL’s German engineering team.
Beyond enhancing the Egyptian Navy’s capabilities, the partnership aims to strengthen the nation’s defense manufacturing base through technology transfer and skills development. It also reinforces Egypt’s long-term strategy of achieving greater self-sufficiency in military ship production.
The new PV43-M program complements Egypt’s broader naval modernization drive. Over the past few years, Egypt has commissioned FREMM frigates from Fincantieri, received locally produced Gowind 2500 corvettes, and expanded its submarine fleet with Type 209/1400 models from Germany. The navy’s Mistral-class helicopter carriers, acquired from France, continue to serve as flagship assets in supporting Egypt’s expanding maritime operations across the Mediterranean and Red Sea.
