Australian aerospace start-up Drone Forge and Airbus Helicopters have formalized an agreement to acquire six Flexrotor UAS packages, encompassing 17 aircraft in total—the largest Flexrotor order to date. These mission-capable systems will be configured to address a variety of operational needs across the Asia-Pacific region, including littoral surveillance, high-altitude inland missions, infrastructure monitoring, and maritime environmental assessments.
Each UAS will feature a heavy fuel engine optimized for maritime operations, providing enhanced safety, reliable fuel supply, and interoperability with naval forces. Additionally, Starlink connectivity will enable beyond-line-of-sight operations and real-time situational awareness. The Flexrotor is also equipped with PT-6 imaging technology, delivering stabilized, high-resolution ISR capabilities ideal for extensive maritime monitoring.
This purchase follows a recently signed Letter of Intent (LOI) between Airbus and Drone Forge, supporting joint efforts for the Flexrotor’s deployment and operational integration.
The Flexrotor, Airbus’ newest addition to its UAS lineup, is a VTOL drone with a maximum takeoff weight of 25 kg (55 lbs), designed for ISTAR missions with endurance of 12 to 14 hours. It accommodates various payloads, including electro-optical systems and advanced sensors, tailored to mission-specific needs. Its autonomous land or sea launch and recovery capabilities require only a small 3.7 by 3.7 meter space, making it ideal for expeditionary missions with limited logistical footprints.
