Sapujjijiit Inc., a Nunavut-based Inuit-owned defense company, is emerging as a key player in Canada’s efforts to fortify Arctic defense and sovereignty. Translating to “defender” in Inuktitut, the company is building a unique bridge between indigenous Arctic knowledge and cutting-edge military innovation, focusing on drone systems, robotics, and environmental sensors tailored for extreme northern conditions. The firm was launched in collaboration with Ottawa’s ONE9 venture group, blending local insight with defense industry investment and technical expertise.
Sapujjijiit’s strategy involves developing localized R&D, production, and integration facilities within the Arctic, reducing dependence on southern suppliers and ensuring faster response to northern defense needs. Early contracts have already been signed with southern Canadian defense companies to deliver testing infrastructure, logistics, and operational support for Arctic projects. This marks a milestone as Indigenous enterprises transition from traditional subcontracting roles to direct participation in defense system development and delivery.
The company’s rise coincides with Canada’s intensified Arctic security focus, outlined in the 2024 Arctic Foreign Policy, which calls for urgent reinforcement of surveillance and operational readiness in northern territories. The government has increasingly turned to Inuit-led companies for critical defense infrastructure—such as the 2022 contract awarded to a majority-Inuit firm to sustain the North Warning System radar chain—blending national defense objectives with community-driven economic development.
In parallel, Canada and the United States are investing billions to modernize NORAD’s early warning systems, integrating long-range radar, satellite-based detection, and over-the-horizon sensing technologies. Ottawa is also funding ice-capable naval vessels and expanding operations at CFS Alert and Nanisivik, ensuring robust surveillance and logistical presence across the Arctic. Through these efforts, Canada is reinforcing its strategic sovereignty while enabling Indigenous participation at the forefront of national defense innovation.
