Britain’s L111A1 heavy machine gun is set to undergo a significant firepower boost following a £20 million ($27.3 million) contract awarded to arms maker FN Herstal. The effort falls within London’s long-term strategy to modernize its weapons inventory and improve operational capabilities across its forces.

The modernization program will span a decade, starting with a two-year mid-life upgrade phase, followed by eight years of sustained support. According to the Ministry of Defense, this ensures the system remains reliable and capable of delivering heavy firepower for both the British Army and Royal Navy.

FN Herstal will implement the upgrades at its Kent-based facility, continuing a 50-year tradition of supporting the UK’s defense needs. The delivery schedule includes 18 percent of the upgraded weapons by early 2026, 50 percent by 2027, and the final batch by 2028.

Originally derived from the Browning M2 design, the L111A1 provides commanders with versatile firepower options. It can be used in static defensive roles or mounted on vehicles for offensive operations. The upcoming upgrades include features such as a quick-change barrel and a soft mount, improving accuracy and reducing recoil. With a firing rate of up to 635 rounds per minute and a range of 2,000 meters, the weapon remains one of the most dependable heavy machine guns in service.
