Defense manufacturer BAE Systems has won new ammunition contracts worth about $171 million to deliver programmable Bofors 40mm and 57mm rounds to Sweden and Finland, reinforcing regional efforts to modernize artillery and air defense forces. The agreements reflect growing defense investments among Nordic countries amid heightened geopolitical tensions.
The contracts, awarded by the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration and the Finnish Defence Forces Logistics Command, include 3P proximity-fused, pre-fragmented ammunition capable of engaging multiple target sets. These rounds can be programmed in flight to counter drones, missiles, small surface vessels, and land-based threats, providing adaptable firepower for both naval and ground operations.
Sweden will field both ammunition calibers across its armed forces, while Finland’s navy will integrate the 57mm rounds into its naval gun systems and air defense architecture. The ammunition is designed for seamless integration with existing armored vehicles, anti-aircraft platforms, and naval combat systems, improving operational flexibility and response times.
The deal follows a series of recent Nordic defense contracts secured by BAE Systems, including BONUS guided artillery munitions for Sweden and a major CV90 infantry fighting vehicle framework agreement with Sweden and Denmark. Together, these programs underscore BAE Systems’ role as a key supplier supporting Northern Europe’s long-term defense modernization and deterrence strategy.
