BAE Systems Hägglunds has signed a strategic agreement with Rheinmetall to arm the CV90120 light tank with the company’s L44A1 120mm low-recoil gun. The collaboration marks a major milestone in developing a powerful yet lightweight armored platform derived from the CV90 MkIV chassis, renowned for its versatility and battlefield performance.

The CV90120 is designed to deliver tank-level firepower in a lighter configuration, offering enhanced speed, maneuverability, and digital command integration. Its upgraded drivetrain, reinforced transmission, and modern active protection suite enable it to operate effectively in high-threat environments while maintaining mobility advantages over traditional main battle tanks.

Rheinmetall’s L44A1 smoothbore cannon, an evolution of the legendary L/44 gun system, measures 44 calibers in length and is approximately 5 meters long. It incorporates low-recoil engineering and a muzzle brake, enabling installation on lighter vehicles without diminishing accuracy or lethality. The weapon remains compatible with all NATO 120mm ammunition, including advanced programmable and kinetic rounds.

The integration of this weapon system ensures that existing CV90 operators can benefit from shared training, logistics, and maintenance networks, simplifying fleet support and operational readiness. By combining proven firepower with a modern mobility platform, the BAE–Rheinmetall partnership aims to redefine the role of light armored vehicles on the modern battlefield.
