In a move to strengthen AUKUS defense cooperation, Leonardo DRS and Hofmann Engineering have announced a new partnership to develop advanced naval propulsion systems for future allied vessels. The collaboration is designed to meet the evolving energy and performance needs of the Australian, British, and U.S. navies, while promoting industrial innovation within the alliance.

The initiative will leverage Leonardo DRS’s deep expertise in hybrid-electric propulsion and Hofmann Engineering’s large-scale manufacturing base in Western Australia. This synergy is expected to boost defense manufacturing capability, supply chain robustness, and maritime technology resilience within the AUKUS framework.

Development efforts will center on next-generation electric, hybrid, and steam propulsion technologies, focusing on efficiency, endurance, and adaptability for diverse naval applications. Both companies will also explore joint export programs and collaborative R&D ventures aligned with AUKUS’ broader strategic objectives.

Leonardo DRS, known for powering the U.S. Navy’s Columbia-class submarines and South Korea’s modern surface combatants, emphasized that the new partnership will safeguard critical propulsion know-how and expand Australia’s role in global naval innovation. The project underscores a collective push to enhance maritime energy security and defense readiness across the Indo-Pacific region.
