The US Army has significantly increased its investment in advanced sniper capabilities by adding $14.2 million to its ongoing contract with Barrett Firearms. This brings the total value of the MK22 rifle deal to over $64 million, ensuring continued support for state-of-the-art modular weapon systems through at least early 2026.
Central to the upgrade is the MK22, or Barrett MRAD, a multi-caliber precision rifle designed for adaptability across diverse battlefield needs. Unlike traditional sniper rifles, the MK22 can swiftly convert between different calibers—most notably 7.62mm and .338—by exchanging barrels and bolt assemblies. This modularity empowers units to respond flexibly to varying mission settings without the logistical burden of multiple weapons.
The amended contract will facilitate delivery of additional barrel kits, allowing Army units to further personalize and enhance their MK22 rifles as per specific operational requirements, terrain challenges, or rules of engagement. The modifications were awarded by the Army Contracting Command in New Jersey, with each order financed and assigned as required by Army planning.
Barrett’s involvement as the MK22’s manufacturer began in 2021, part of a broader effort to supersede legacy sniper rifles such as the M2010 and M107, some of which have been in arsenal service for decades. Deliveries for this latest contract update are slated to extend into March of 2026. This measure aligns with a wider Army initiative to modernize long-range precision arms and refine the capabilities of sniper teams critical to tactical operations.
Barrett Firearms, based in Tennessee, is renowned for its legendary .50-caliber M82—the backbone of many military sniper units worldwide. The company’s recent selection, in collaboration with MARS Inc., to deliver the Army’s new precision grenade launcher highlights its enduring impact on modern military armaments.
