In a major step toward modernizing logistics for the U.S. military, the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) has created a new command to oversee the delivery of spare and replacement parts that keep critical weapon systems in service. The unit, officially named DLA Weapons Support, will be responsible for ensuring steady access to Class IX supplies, which form the backbone of repair and sustainment operations for U.S. forces.

The initiative combines the work of two existing commands, DLA Aviation in Richmond, Virginia, and DLA Land and Maritime in Columbus, Ohio, into a single unified organization. By consolidating their missions, the DLA aims to reduce redundancy, streamline supply management, and provide more agile support to frontline units requiring aircraft, vehicle, and equipment components.

Both facilities will remain active, continuing to provide their specialized services under the new command name. Physical signage and official designations will gradually be updated to align with the restructured framework, while retaining continuity in day-to-day operations to avoid disruption for defense partners.

Leadership of the new organization will be jointly managed for a year as the transition unfolds. In addition, the DLA emphasized that both employees and customers will receive timely updates throughout the process. The realignment underscores the Pentagon’s broader focus on enhancing readiness and reinforcing the supply chain that underpins the military’s global capabilities.
