In a decisive move to keep pace with evolving threat environments, Italy has partnered with AeroVironment to acquire the state-of-the-art Jump 20 UAV system, thereby replacing the outdated AAI RQ-7 Shadow units in its inventory. The transaction, valued at $46.6 million, runs for five years and includes not only the provision of airframes but also technical support, sustainment, and specialized engineering services—all designed to guarantee a seamless, operationally ready transition from day one of fielding.

Central to the Jump 20’s utility is its adaptability in multi-domain operations. The UAV is ideally suited to missions that require rapid deployment, high endurance, and rich sensor integration, such as intelligence gathering, continuous surveillance, and battlefield reconnaissance. Its design allows for vertical takeoff and landing without ground-based launch or recovery apparatus, thereby supporting missions from confined areas and forward-deployed positions. Operationally, the system offers more than 13 hours of continuous flight on a single fueling and supports payloads up to 30 pounds, delivering real-time, high-fidelity video and sensor data across a wide geographical reach.

This UAV is outfitted with cutting-edge technologies, including the ARCAM 45D imaging suite and advanced EO/MWIR thermal sensors, which bring significant improvements in tracking, targeting, and mission data collection. The real-time video stabilization and onboard analytics ensure operators have immediate, actionable intelligence, whether for peacetime border security or high-risk combat support. This contract aligns perfectly with Italy’s defense modernization plans, delivering a solution that emphasizes modularity, high performance, and reliability for military aviation operations.
